City makes handwashing stations, cell phones available to Austin homeless amid COVID-19

AUSTIN, Texas — As Austin-Travis County’s COVID-19 numbers continue to increase daily, it’s obvious to city leaders and health officials that that some populations don’t have the resources to stay safe during this pandemic. Most people in the general population have access to smartphones to stay informed on the latest information on COVID-19. But, others aren’t so lucky.

“A lot of people that are experiencing homelessness have smartphones, have phones and would be able to access this tool, but certainly many do not,” said Vella Karman, Interim Homeless Services Officer with Austin Public Health.
